About TangStep
I never imagined I would one day teach Chinese dance to the world.
Our Story
Each form is a living archive, handed down through generations.
I was born and raised in China. Here, dance grew out of life — out of ritual, out of the imitation of creatures in the wild. It was never merely entertainment. It was how we told stories, carried memory, and reached for something larger than ourselves. From the sweeping grace of Han-Tang court dance to the fierce rhythms of Uyghur folk dance, from the sacred hand gestures of Dunhuang to the discipline of martial arts — each form is a living archive, handed down through generations.

But beyond China, the richness of Chinese dance remains largely unseen. Its depth is too often reduced to a handful of symbols; its diversity, too often hidden behind stereotype. I wanted that to change.
Why This Platform Exists
TangStep is my answer. It is not simply a place to learn steps. It is a window onto a world of beauty, history, and philosophy cultivated over millennia.
I built TangStep because I believe Chinese dance belongs to everyone. You need not be Chinese to feel the gentleness of Dai dance. You need not speak the language to grasp the power of Sword Dance. Curiosity is enough. A willingness to move is enough.
My Background
- One of China’s leading academies — Chinese folk and ethnic dance
- Two years of choreography at California Institute of the Arts
- Large-scale national productions, including the World University Games
- Independent contemporary theatre works such as Anemia
I trained at one of China’s leading academies in Chinese folk and ethnic dance, then spent two years studying choreography at California Institute of the Arts. That dual foundation — deep roots in the East, shaped by a contemporary Western perspective — informs everything I teach.
Over the years, I have contributed to large-scale national productions, including the World University Games, and led independent contemporary theatre works such as Anemia. I have choreographed and taught across China — the poetry of Suzhou and Hangzhou, the pulse of Beijing and Shanghai, all of it has entered my body’s memory. I have also spent time studying, travelling, and living briefly in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Portsmouth — learning, quietly, to listen with the body across cultures.
All these places have shaped me. Now, I wish to give something back.

This site is still in its early days. I am building it quietly, piece by piece, with a small team who share a simple belief: that Chinese dance can be a bridge — one that needs no translation, connecting people through the body.
Whether you are here to stretch, to learn, or simply to look — you are welcome.
Open your horizon. Learn Chinese dance, step by step.
